IAS: Indian Administrative Service

The top-notch and highly reputed administrative civil service provided by the government of India is Indian Administrative Service enlisted along with IRS, IFS, and IPS via examination of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). An IAS officer is responsible for strategic positions in the Union government and several other public sector undertakings as well. IAS is one of the major position in all India services along with Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Forest Service (IFS).  IAS in 1946 right after Indian Imperial Service (1883-1946) was brought to existence. Central and state government employs its staff.

IAS Full Form

IAS officers become a part of the state administration at the sub-divisional level as an SDM and protect and maintain law and order as when beginning their career.

Educational qualification:

Exams are scheduled every year by the Union Public Services Commission. The applicant must first hold a graduate degree from a recognized degree to be able to apply for this reputed job. It is a competitive exam and is considered to be one of the toughest exams in India. Statistics show in the year 2012, more than 5 lacks students enrolled for this exam out of which only 170 were finally appointed for IAS. 

 

IAS officer has the following roles to play:

  • Maintaining Law and Order and general administration in his working area.
  • Handling the daily affairs of the Government.
  • Performs as Executive Magistrate, Chief Development Officer/District Development Commissioner.
  • Policy formation and decision making.
  • Distribution of funds and resources for implementing the policies
  • Travel to specific places to oversee the implementation of policies
  • Ensuring zero irregularities in fund allocation and management

Some of the designations offered to IAS officers during field posting are stated below:

  • SDM, Joint Collector, Chief Development Officer (CDO)
  • District Magistrate, District Collector or Commissioner
  • Divisional Commissioner

IAS officers during a posting in Secretariat of State Government/Central Government have the following designations:

  • Under Secretary in Government of India
  • Deputy Secretary in Government of India
  • Director in Government of India
  • Joint Secretary to Government of India
  • Secretary to Government of India
  • Cabinet Secretary

IAS officer has the understated salary structure

  • In the position of Cabinet Secretary of India, in cabinet secretary grade the salary offered is up-to INR 90,000.
  • Chief Secretary of State, union secretaries in charge of various ministries of government on India in the apex scale grade gets paid up-to INR 80,000.
  • Principal secretaries/financial commissioners in states, additional secretaries to the government of India above super time scale grade get paid in the range of INR 67,000-79,000.
  • Divisional commissioner in a division or secretary in state government or position of joint secretary to the government of India in a super time scale gets paid in the range of INR 37,400-67,000 plus grade pay of INR 10,000.
  • District collector in a district or special secretary in the state government or a director in the central government in selection grade gets INR 37,400-67,000 plus grade pay of INR 8700.
  • In Junior administrative grade, a joint secretary in the state government or deputy secretary in the central gets INR 15,600-39,100 plus grade pay of INR 7600.
  • In senior time scale grade for the Chief development officer or municipal commissioner in a district or undersecretary in the state or o.s.d in central government, the pay scale ranges within INR 15,600-39,100 plus grade pay of INR 6600.
  • In junior time scale grade for the sub-divisional magistrate in a sub-division of a district, the pay scale ranges within INR 15,600-39,100 plus grade pay of INR 5400.
