What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a single, unified indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India, replacing multiple older taxes like VAT, service tax, and excise duty.
GST is charged at different rates depending on the category of goods or services — commonly 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% — and is split between the Central and State governments for transactions within a state, or collected as a single Integrated GST for transactions between states.
How GST is Calculated
Adding GST
GST Amount = Original Amount × GST Rate ÷ 100. Total Amount = Original Amount + GST Amount.
Removing GST
Original Amount = Inclusive Amount × 100 ÷ (100 + GST Rate). GST Amount = Inclusive Amount − Original Amount.
CGST, SGST & IGST
For sales within the same state, the GST amount is split equally into CGST and SGST. For sales between two different states, the full GST amount is charged as IGST instead.
Common GST Rate Slabs in India
| GST Rate | Typically applies to |
|---|---|
| 3% | Gold, silver, and certain precious stones |
| 5% | Essential goods and select services |
| 12% | Standard-rated goods and services |
| 18% | Most goods and services (the most common slab) |
| 28% | Luxury and sin goods |
FAQs
India follows a multi-tier GST structure with slabs of 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, depending on the type of goods or services. This calculator also lets you enter any custom GST rate.
For intra-state transactions, GST is split equally into CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) — for example, 18% GST becomes 9% CGST and 9% SGST. For inter-state transactions, the full amount is charged as IGST (Integrated GST) instead.
To add GST, multiply the original amount by the GST rate and divide by 100 to get the GST amount, then add it to the original amount to get the total. This calculator does that automatically.
Divide the GST-inclusive amount by (100 + GST rate) and multiply by 100 to get the original amount. Subtract the original amount from the inclusive amount to get the GST amount.
